Pre-Treatment & Filtration

We supply seawater pre-treatment and filtration equipment for desalination — UF membrane systems, multimedia filters, disc filters, and chemical dosing for RO feed water quality.

Pre-Treatment & Filtration

Pre-treatment quality determines RO membrane performance and lifetime. Gulf seawater presents specific pre-treatment challenges — seasonal algal blooms (HABs), high suspended solids after haboob events, and hydrocarbon contamination near port and industrial areas. Inadequate pre-treatment is the leading cause of premature membrane fouling in GCC RO plants. We supply pre-treatment systems designed for Gulf feedwater conditions.

What we supply

  • Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane systems — hollow fibre, pressurised and submerged
  • Multimedia pressure filters — single and dual media, pressure and gravity
  • Disc filters and automatic self-cleaning filters for coarser pre-filtration
  • Chemical dosing systems — coagulant, antiscalant, disinfection, dechlorination
  • Dissolved air flotation (DAF) for algae and organic removal
  • Chlorination and dechlorination systems
  • Cartridge filter housings — final barrier before RO membranes

How the project proceeds

  1. Conduct a feedwater quality assessment including seasonal variation
  2. Select pre-treatment train based on SDI target for RO feed and feedwater quality
  3. Source equipment from qualified manufacturers with Gulf desalination references
  4. Support commissioning and optimisation of chemical dosing during plant startup

Why Infinity

Gulf feedwater pre-treatment is not a one-size-fits-all solution — the right pre-treatment train depends on the specific feedwater quality at the intake location, including seasonal algal bloom risk. We source systems from manufacturers who have references in GCC conditions, not just generic water treatment experience.

Is UF pre-treatment better than conventional multimedia filtration for Gulf seawater?

For Gulf seawater with variable turbidity and algal bloom risk, UF provides more consistent SDI output and better protection for RO membranes — at higher capital cost but lower operating risk.

What SDI target should pre-treatment achieve for SWRO?

SWRO membrane manufacturers typically require SDI15 below 3 at the membrane feed — UF pre-treatment reliably achieves SDI below 2.

Do you supply hypochlorite dosing systems?

Yes — sodium hypochlorite generation and dosing systems for seawater disinfection at the intake are available, including electrochlorination systems for on-site chlorine generation.
